Gravity-Fall, Dough or Pharmaceutical Metal Detector: Which Fits Your Line?

Quick selection guide

Start with the product type and transfer method, then review line speed, opening dimensions, packaging and installation requirements. These factors help determine the appropriate detector family and configuration.

A guide to choosing the right machine, based on your product type, texture and production line.

One of the most common questions we hear before a customer buys an industrial metal detector is: "Which metal detector fits my production line?" The answer depends on three main factors: your product's type and texture, how the product moves through your line (belt, pressurized, or free-fall), and the sensitivity level your industry standard requires. Below, we look at the three main types of industrial metal detectors we manufacture and where each one fits.

Dough & Meat Product Metal Detector

This type is designed for materials with a sticky, moist or dense texture — like dough, sausage, cured meats and other meat products. Since these products usually move continuously through a tunnel or along a conveyor, the machine needs to stay accurate in detecting fine metal particles while also staying stable against the line's moisture, temperature and pressure. If your line handles this kind of material, this model is usually the first choice.

Pharmaceutical Metal Detector

The pharmaceutical industry holds far stricter standards than food production, because even the smallest metal particle in a capsule or tablet can be dangerous. A pharmaceutical metal detector is built to catch very fine metal particles in small volumes (tablets, capsules, pharmaceutical powder), typically operating at higher speed and accuracy than food-industry models. If your product is manufactured under food and drug administration oversight, this is the right choice.

Gravity-Fall Metal Detector

Unlike the two models above, where product moves along a conveyor, in a gravity-fall detector the product falls freely from top to bottom through a sealed sensing coil. This model is built for lines where the product is bulk, powder or granular, and moves by free-fall rather than a conveyor — like filling lines, mills or silos. Since the product never directly touches the coil, this method works very well for high-volume, continuous-flow materials.

Ultimately, the best way to make a final decision is to share your production line's specifications (product type, line speed and production volume) with our specialists, since sometimes a combination of two models or custom settings is recommended for a single line.
